Learning Objectives: Hands-On Acupuncture Review for Chronic and Neuropathic Pain
By the end of this practical review session, participants will be able to:
Perform a focused pain assessment to distinguish common features of chronic nociceptive, neuropathic, and nociplastic pain.
Palpate and accurately identify relevant anatomical landmarks, tender points, trigger points, peripheral nerve pathways, and commonly used acupuncture points.
Demonstrate safe patient positioning and skin preparation for acupuncture treatment of common chronic and neuropathic pain conditions.
Select appropriate local, distal, segmental, and contralateral acupuncture points based on the patient’s pain location, symptoms, functional limitations, and clinical presentation.
Demonstrate safe needle insertion, depth, angle, manipulation, and removal techniques in commonly treated anatomical regions.
Apply appropriate needling modifications for patients with reduced sensation, diabetes, impaired circulation, anticoagulant use, frailty, or increased risk of tissue injury.
Demonstrate the safe application of electroacupuncture, including lead placement, parameter selection, intensity adjustment, contraindication screening, and patient monitoring.
Develop and perform a practical acupuncture treatment protocol for common conditions such as chronic low-back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, peripheral neuropathy, radicular pain, and postherpetic neuralgia.
Monitor the patient during treatment and respond appropriately to pain, bleeding, dizziness, vasovagal reactions, needle discomfort, or other adverse events.
Reassess pain, sensation, movement, and function following treatment and use the findings to modify point selection, treatment dosage, frequency, and future care planning
